hey guys, I'm going to be setting up an indoor shark pond soon, and i was planning on plumbing it into my existing 75gal FOWLR tank. [the tank overflows into the pond, which overflows into the sump and is pumped into the tank.]
i just found out there are tessy eels available where i am, [fell in love with the most beautiful 2' specimen] so i'm thinking of upgrading the tank since i'm already going monster with the pond.
how large would the tank have to be to accommodate the eel at max size? i know footprint is key and i'll prolly be custom making this tank anyway. what kind of max size can i expect? how long for it to reach that? i know these are the most basic questions ever but i cant find much useful info out there on tessies. any info regarding this species is much appreciated. thanks.

I would say a 180 gal would be a good start.

i was actually planning on starting with a 280 :D
but i was wondering how long that'd last me and if i should either get it's final tank right now or give up on the idea [depending on what this beast's min tank size is when it's an adult]

if you got the tessie at like 18'' (depending on the shape of the tank) it could last 2-3 years maybe more

How long of a tank is your 280? In the wild, Tessalattas can get up to 9 feet. That usually doesn't happen in captivity but the largest tessie I have seen was 6 feet long and about 14 inches thick. That particular tessie was 9 years old but if you plan to house the eel for it's entire life, you need to know what you are getting into.

good luck with your eel get some pics up asap :)

Just don't overkill the feeding. Every other day as a juvi and then twice a week as an adult. The more you feed, the bigger it will get and fast.
