test the water temp, unless you mean without placing it in the tank then hmmmmmmmmmmmm. a test tank maybe?
Depending on the size of the heater, I generally use a 5 gallon bucket. for 200W and up I use a 55 gallon aquarium.
well heres my problem.
ive had the heater for like 2 months.
it worked perfect up till now.
a few days ago i opened the lids and felt heat.
checked the temp,it was almost 90.
i had it set on 82.
well now i turned it to 78 and the temp is about 82-84.

Yeah, your just going to have to adjust the dial. If it continues to rise in temp, it is time to get a new heater. Jagers, are easy to use, and work very well.
