test strips

They aren't very accurate. They are OK for spot tests, but other tests are better.

You just get a range reading with the strips. With a good test kit you know exactly where you are. For example: a test strip will tell you your water is dangerous for ammonia. A good test kit can tell you that you are 5.00 ppm. It is much easier to fix if you know where you are. At 5.00 you can do a couple of water changes and be fine. TO me a dangerous level means drastic steps. Water changes are not drastic, just normal.

not only that, but the strips (duh) react with water. not closing the container properly or opening it in a humid environment will allow moisture to get onto the strips and get them to start reacting, which makes them much less effective once you actually use them to test a water sample.
