Testing Water for Ammonia, Nitrates and Nitrites

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i'm not really sure what you're asking..

we all SHOULD be testing our aquariums regularly for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. also total dissolved solids (TDS) and PH and for some folks GH and KH are also important tests.

if your tank is properly cycled and your Beneficial bacteria colony in your filter and substrate is healthy the ammonia tests should read 0 ppm. same with nitrites. nitrates are a natural product of beneficial bacteria and regular water changes should keep this to under 40 ppm. city water TDS is normally in the 300-400 ppm range.

i don't know if the same tests you are talking about for urine are appropriate tests, ATI and several other manufacturers make tests that are specifically for use in aquariums. you can find them in most pet stores and all LFS.

thanks catherine.. the nitrogen cycle bit i understand.. just thought bout what if.. i've never checked my tanks for anything so far.. kits are pretty expensive here in india.. i really should get myself one though.. i jus asked my mum bout it.. she is a doc.. she is gonna check with a lab technician.. will let you ppl know what they say.. cheers..

No you should not pee in your tank to fishless cycle it
Yes you should pee on your wifes rose bushes as it will easily increase rose production by 20%
Yes I used a control Rose Bush in my experiment that's where I got the 20% from
