So my girlfriend is interested in getting a small tank, and I am thinking about getting something no bigger than 10g for her. She loves green terrors but obviously they need something much bigger. We looked into crowntail and halfmoon bettas but she seems to like tetras. What type and how many tetras could we get for a 5.5g or 10g tank? Any other suggestions welcome.

There are so many to choose from.My top favorites are the Congo tetras,Buenos Aires, and the Columbian tetras. You could put a couple of them in a ten gallon and have a nice display.

I would personally go with something smaller and get more of them. If you went with something like cardinals, you could have about 12 in a 10 gallon

Yeah or go with Daios or the smaller types of tetras.

How about some rummy noses?

I also love the look of the cardinal tetra. But its not a very beginner freindly fish. They can be very hard to acclimate to a new tank with out death. SO just be careful.

Make sure the tank is fully cycled before buying them. And maybe do a drip acclimation on the new fish for a hour or so.

Thanks for the posts. Will be getting a tank to cycle today most likely.

Keep in mind that tetras are a schooling fish, you can't have 2 or 3 of any one species you need a group of 6-10 of the same species. Most tetras get too big to put that many in a 10 gallon tank.

White cloud minnows, cardinal tetras, neon tetras, glolight tetras and microrasboras are about your only options.

If you went with a 5.5 gallon tank, no tetras at all.

Keep in mind that a betta, a few fresh water shrimp and a snail make for a nifty combination. I would find the diversity of those three far more fascinating than a single species of fish. A 10 is a really small tank. Be careful what you stock it with.

Remember you can use your own filter media to cycle it.

If she likes green terrors, get her a blue acara. It's like a mini-gt.

*edit* Oh wait, you said 10g, nevermind.

some neon tetras and a few shrimp would be nice... with live plants and some wood...
