Tetra Pond 9-watt UV Clarifier?

I went to my local petsmart today and came across a Tetra Pond UV Sterilizer. It was in an open box so It was marked down from $150 to $70. I took it to the register and I told the manager I would give her $35 and she said ok, sweet. It is brand new with no sighns of use.

The box says it is rated for ponds up to 1800g and 900gph.

Is 9-watts enough?

I plan on plumming it in line on my new FX-5 on my 180g.

Any comments/suggestions/experience would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

somebody, anybody please?

Okay, this is just my assumption since i'm new to using UV filter's myself... but if all your using it for is dealing with green water then i would guess it should just take a little longer to clear it all up as opposed to using a higher powered UV?

First, $35 for a 9w UV unit is a great deal. I've heard good things about the Tetra Pond UV units. Durable, easy to clean, etc.

Second, 600gph going through a 9w UV unit is about 67gph per watt. That isn't going to do much of anything except clear green water.

From my research,

5 - 10 gph per watt -> kills parasites
20 - 30 gph per watt -> kills bacteria and fungus
40 - 50 gph per watt -> kills algae

I have the same unit I use it on my 300 gallon out door pond in the spring to control green water. it works fine for that. I usually only run it for the month of april until the water lettuce becomes available then i turn it off

Great thanks to all who replied!

As mentioned above, you should look at a much lower flow rate for your UV. If suggest running it off a separate pump at the flow rates detailed above

Im not really worried about parasites and stuff since i always keep pristine water conditions. I just wanted to keep the water algae free since it does get some direct sunlight.

I do have and eheim 2213 canister that is stuffed full of polyfill for water polishing running in/out of my emp 400, should i plum the uv to that?

So from 5-10 gph per watt kills parasites, bacteria, fungus and algae?
