This is my second tetra whisper air pump. I had a 100 once before for a larger tank and just purchased a 40 for my 33 gallon tank. Both were purchased new and I am yet to own a different brand of air pump then this.

From what I keep reading tetra whispers are the way to go .. quietest etc but I have my doubts.

Maybe I've just purchased two bad tetra whispers by coincidence but I don't overly find these to be quiet at all. My fish tank is placed in my room where I sleep so I like to have my tank as silent as possible.

As I mentioned, I've never owned a different air pump so maybe the rest are just even louder then this one but I find even if my filters etc are all off and the only thing running is my air pump it's still pretty loud when I'm trying to get to sleep.

Is it just the whisper I bought? Should I try and return and get another or do they all make the annoying vibration sound. Everyone keeps writing and telling me that the sound from this brand is supposed to be basically silent (barely hear it .. if at all)

Because they are all mini compressors in a sense, they are all going to vibrate. The key to getting them as quiet as possible is to place the pump on a surface that will dampen the sound. On mine, I folded up a micro fiber cloth and sat my whisper pump on it. It's almost completely silent. Just be careful not to cover the air intake on the bottom of the pump.

i laid it on my thick carpet floor last night to try that but its still a racket when it comes time to sleep.

The one I use is a 60 and it's perfectly quit on the hardwood in the inside of my stand, dunno what to tell you. Best thing I can think of is do what ThatCashKid said or maybe try some small felt pads on the feet of the pump.
