Looking for a good schooling tetra for my 75g Uruguayan tank. The smaller the better so it can be a large, dense school. Obviously has to withstand temps in the mid to low 60's as I keep my house cold in the winter. No Buenos Aires tetras. Maybe platys? Can they take low temps?

Bloodfins. There are a few others that are slipping my mind right now, I'm sure somebody will come up with more.

Bloodfins are a great choice. I use lots of them. Serpaes and black tetras are also pretty tough.

Goodeids like Ameca splendens are both cold tolerant and about the right the right attitude... also babies are a good food source.

There are some pretty cool native Uruguayan tetras but they're just not available in the hobby much...and challenging to transport back.

thanks guys. the bloodfins are pretty nice. about the size i am thinking of too.

what about the platy idea? they look ok and thier babies would be a good food source.

:iagree: swordtails are nice. i have some in a 20gal and i feed the babies to mah other fish.

Call me crazy, even though the swordtails are a natural species, i feel that thier tail screams "I am a common aquarium fish and my tail is all for show".

eh... maybe. i guess it depends on what kind u get.

That's true, the tail does look like something line-bred.

I would think mollies would work too, if you're not looking for strictly Uruguayan/South American. They're probably a bit more cold-tolerant than the swords or platies. Tons of barb/danio types too if you wanted to go that route...white clouds obviously, but the small danios (pearl, zebra etc) are supposed to be ok in cooler water.
