What are the best tetras for Salvini dithers? Sals are still small 3" maybe. My silver dollars finally grew large enough to add to the school in the big tank. Now my Sal tank is looking empty. Never liked the SD in w them. Petsmart, i know I know, is having their dollar tetra sale so I could pick up a good school for $10 lol

Tough one Tetras with Sals, somthing bigger and fast maybe BATs or some Red & Blue Tetras (Hyphessobrycon columbianus) but I think they will all get picked off eventually.

Jeremoose,
None of my aquarist friends have kept Sals. I am the first to do it. They are still young, so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. I know they are labeled as vicious but I wasn't exactly sure how bad they REALLY are. I have a Jag, a Flowerhorn, a Buttikoferi, an Oscar, a Tex, etc etc all known terrorists and eaters. I have had some success keeping dithers with them. Mostly SD's but my Flowerhorn tolerates Mbuna, I know no comparison, and my Butti lives with tetras (Serpaes) no problems. I had Jacks with Giant Danios etc etc. I was hoping that the tetras, since they are currently the same size as the Sals would be alright for a while and that maybe the Sals would accept them as they grow having been around them for so long. Mistake on my behalf I assume?

Aquanero,
They have both red and blue and buenos aires both are easily accessible. Maybe if I add a large school they will survive better? or no?

I have lemon tetras and buenos aires tetras with my sals and they are fine. Sals are like max 3" so I'm sure that wont last forever

Any kind of larger tetra should be fine. Small ones will be eaten. Even livebarers like swordtails work great with salvini and I have never had any problems. I find most cichlids only care about other cichlids with aggression, and tend to ignor schooling fish. If you get tetras make sure you have 6+. Buenos aires and columbian would be good sp. to keep with salvinis.

black tetras ive used before for this purpose. they are fast and tall bodied

Either one should do the job. Pick the one you like the best and get at least 7 I like odd numbers with Tetras.

Thanks everyone. I went with the columbian red blues. School of six, they survived the lights out test. LOL They went in last night got used to the surroundings. I added more plants etc to add some newness for the Sals as well. And after turning the lights out for the night and checking on the this morning. Everyone is still alive and uninjured. I had tried some small barbs before and by the morning bodies were everywhere. So I figure if they were going to go for them, they would've done it under the cover of darkness. I'm thinking of adding six more.
