I am considering getting some tetras and was wondering if regular neon tetras and gold neon tetras school together. Or even red eye tetras.

I found most small tetras about the same size alway tend to school together but that was in my 180 gallon tank do in my opinion if there the same size then they should school together just my experience though don't hold me to it :)

they might if the tank is big and theres big fish as they feel threaten. but to me neons dont even school well. most of the time they just scatter everywhere.. from the 3 u mention the red eyes are the best schoolers. or if u want a tetra that always school go for rummynose. one of the best schooling tetras.

Im just lookin for some fish to replace the silver dollars that have grown too big and are eating my newly planted tank. Something that looks nice with the plants (java fern, anubis, and hopefully soon some micro sword). Haha as im speaking the SDs are up to no good, trying to eat my java fern.

Personally I like gourami. Especially
Trichogaster trichopterus. They get along with my community fish and tetras very well. But you can get a mean one. Especially if they are breeding. But you might not want to risk it. Like some other people said rummynose are a good choice for your likes and you should probably check those out.

I have a school of 6 Neon Tetras (previously 10) and the only time they really school is when they felt threatened. They will stay close together but more in a scattered formation. If you get different types of Neons, they will school together. Tetras do the same thing.

I've had Red Eyes and they were a bit nippy, but all tetras are. If you want really passive tetras, get Emperoer Tetras. Not only are they beautiful but great community fish. Bleeding Hearts are also great community fish, though males are more aggressive. I have three females and a possible male juvi which do well together. The more of them you have, the more time they will be occupied with their own species and spend less time nipping other species.

I love Gouramis but every one that I had caused problems. They do well if its a female in a community tank but males are very territorial. I just rehomed a male gold who attacked everyone in my community tank, including my loaches. They fit in under certain circumstances. Dwarf Gouramis on ther other hand are small, peaceful and are passive towards other small fish.

Yh ive had a bad experiance with a gourami that i had (it was the biggest jerk id ever seen), but some dwarf or pygmy gouramis look real nice. Im probably going to go with some bleeding hearts and some other kind. If i get back from the trip im going on and my lfs had some congos ill def get them. Theyve never had emporers though
