I have a quick question. I have a tetratec pf5oo on a 55gal mixed cichlid tank with 9 cichlids ranging from 2.5" to 3.5" and 3 cory cats and 1 small pleco, Filter seems to do an execellent job. I am wondering if I regulate it to stop the "living filter" part from emptying and filling, and adjust it so it would be wet all the time, would this still provide good bio. It is fairly loud, just wondering if this would function like another type of HOB that has the bio sponge submereged all the time. THANKS

I have one of those filters too. They can be a little noisy, but mine doesn't bother me. My filter cycles about once every 5 seconds. Maybe you could adjust your filter to cycle slower and it would be less annoying???

To answer your question, IMO the biological filter would still work, but not as efficiently. The aerobic bacteria would have to get all its oxygen from the water instead of the air. If you do run the filter with the sponge constantly submerged, you should make sure you have enough surface agitation to keep the water well oxygenated.
