I had my texas cichlid for about 4 months. Hes always been the normal color but a few weeks ago i noticed a little bit of black under his mouth, kinda like he grew a beard. It slowly spread now almost the whole bottom half of his body is jet black. anyone ever seen this? is this possibly not a texas cichlid?

Nope, its not a texas....aghh....I know what type it is but I can't member the name. Its a type of 'texas' so to say...rrrg! Buggin me now! something 'rio salto'....hold up...Herichthys labridens 'rio salto'...haha..thats what it is. My fav. H. labridens though has to be Herichthys labridens 'Media Luna'...
..heres an adult in breedin colors. They had an article on them in one of the recent TFH magazines...very kewl cichlids! Unfortunetly, I think they are protected now from any wild harvest do to inter species breeding and loss of habitat. Several people in the states have them I'm sure though, so if you can find them and get their fry...your good to go..

...I don't see why its not a Texas. He's (or she) is probably just in breeding dress. They turn black and white from their regular green.

Texas cichlid is used very sparingly....Herichthys cyanoguttatus, Herichthys carpintis, Herichthys sp. "Blue Labridens" , Herichthys sp. "Rio Salto" and several others are commonly called 'Texas' cichlids at some point or another....
The true and original Texas is Herichthys cyanoguttatus. Carpintis is known as the Green Texas or Pearl Cichlid. No idea what species red texas is, looks like it might just be a color morph of carpintis. There's also a Herichthys sp. called "Blue Cichlid" with even bigger splotches of color than carpintis and maybe some streaks of color. Then there's those carpintis looking flowerhorn. It's a mess.

It does look alot like that herichthys labridens, not much yellow on mine though. I dont think its in mating mode because the only other fish in the tank is a jag and other than at feeding time I've never seen them even come close to eachother.
