I had my texas cichlid for about 4 months. Hes always been the normal color but a few weeks ago i noticed a little bit of black under his mouth, kinda like he grew a beard. It slowly spread now almost the whole bottom half of his body is jet black. anyone ever seen this? is this possibly not a texas cichlid?

what you describe is a typical coloration change of a Herichthys species. some change only on the lower portion of the body extending from the lower jaw to the back half of the body. at times you may see black vertical bars on the back half of the body and at other times the entire back half of the body may be entirely black.

It does look alot like that herichthys labridens, not much yellow on mine though. I dont think its in mating mode because the only other fish in the tank is a jag and other than at feeding time I've never seen them even come close to eachother.

He/she doesn't have to have a mate to be in breeding mode. The instinct for them to reproduce is very strong, and its very common for a solo fish to go through all the normal breeding stages sans partner - right down to a female laying and guarding eggs, until she eats them a few days later because they're infertile.

the cichlid un the photo abbove is no a texas in breeding dress its a Herichthys bartoni and they are frome the same famely but they dont have a similar breeding dress

...yep, we know. The pic of the fish isn't the fish in question, it was peanut_power's suggestion of what the fish in question might be.

The 'Red Texas' is a hybrid. Midas/RD crossed with a Texas. The actual red morph is very rare, and therefore very expensive when you find it.

So it's a Midas/RD crossed with a Green Texas (carpintis and not cyanoguttatus)?

the only cichlid pictured in this thread is Herichthys labridens "yellow" from the Media Luna lagoon in the Panuco basin of Mexico. Here is a link to an article on Herichthys bartoni and there is a picture of a pair in breeding dress. You are right however, that the texas types, the labridens types and bartoni have similar yet different breeding dress.

i had a texas that also turned black for a while then turned normal again... never found out y either and i dont know scietific names so im no help :swear:
