I got a 12" texas and 10" butterkoferi from a seller one month ago. I saw him feed them dog food when I went there to pick up. after I got them, i never see them eat anything but they look healthy. I also bought dog food for them but they do not eat. I tried hikari cichilid gold pellet, cichild staple. I put things in but never see them eat. those pellet i put in disappear after i came back from work. but I am afraid it was eaten by other fish or dissolved and filtered out. what is the possible reason and what is the solution?

Perhaps your fish were eating behind your back if they seem healthy. Any abnormal signs aside from failing to eat? Try frozen foods such as shrimps and bloodworms but don't overdo the frozen stuffs as bloodworms have very high protein content which can result into bloat. Try smearing the foods with garlic.

yeah fish tend to do that when they're moved around and new owner and such, i had a 3 inch flowerhorn given to me before that took about a month for it to finally accept food other than live... was a pain in the... *** haha

thanks. no abnormal signs as far as i know. last week i put in a 6" flowerhorn these two nearly harassed him to death.

I hope that is the case with me. We save one month fish food. :D

my mayan did that, i wasnt sure he was eating.
it took him nearly 2 weeks before he even took the food!
when you get a larger cichlid new, it takes them a while to get used to their surroundings, the mayan eats non stop now and even from my hand.
just give it some time and dont get too worried over it.
no fish will readily starve to death when food is available.
