What is the temperment of a Texas Cichlid? An lfs near me has a beauty that i would love to have, but i have no idea how well they do with others. He would be going in with my 2 severums, a Jag, and my JD.

Thanks for any info.

Most Texas's Ive owend have been placid for the most part, but each fish has a different personality. I'm sure as long as he's close in size he'd be able to hold his own with the tankmates you have.

They are among the most aggressive fish I've ever owned, especially when breeding. Every fish has a different personality though. Chances are you'll be fine with a 6'+ tank.

Hi

Texas cichlids are one of my favourite cichlids i have had 4 over the years. they grow to around 10" or so may be a bit bigger. there are two definite species carpintis and cygonottaum (cant remember the spelling) in the uk carpintis is common in dealers.
They are aggressive although not one the scale of some of the big central americas but they can easily kill weaker fish. Also as you know put a 6" jaguar cichlid in a small tank with other cichlids and they will get murdered, put him in a 200 gallon and he will be a more docile fish as he doesnt have to continually defend his teritory. same applies with texas cichlids.
How big is your tank?
How big is your jaguar cichlid?

if your jaguar cichlid sees the texas as a threat he may kill him easily as jaguars are more powerful and aggressive than texas.

If you want to keep a single texas the it may work out.
A breeding pair are very aggressive and mine have spawned at 3" and are more than capable of defending there fry against 10" oscar, 4 -5 "convicts.

any more advice please ask i will dig out some pictures of them

My tex only shows aggression toward fish of similar size, that pose a threat to his dominance. He allows smaller tankmates as long as they do not challenge his authority.

I would agree with TFG. In a 6' + tank, you would probably be ok providing everyone is a similar size.

texas cichlids are agressive cichlids, but not nearly one of the top agresers of the cichlid world.

chances are ur jag will be the dominate one of the tank, but then again every fish has a diff personality. Mine is actaully shy.

heres mine.

i just bought 4 carpintis and one of the males murdered the other overnight, the one that is dead is was very calm but the other was just psycho

All comes down to the individual fish

Generally Carpintis are more aggressive with some being totally nasty Cyano are usually less aggressive but can still be mean

That's weird, I've heard some people say the same, and others swear the Carpintis is the more docile of the two. Maybe it just comes down to individual personality.
