I seen a 3 inch texas cichlid at the LFS and this fish was really into me... i mean it followed me, try biting me through the glass, etc... and so i said this fish picked me so im gonna take it home. I think it is a male cause there is a small nuchal hump developing, but idk. can i get some opinions and basic input on these Texas cichlids. thanks

one of my favorite fish was a female Texas . . . found her at 1.5" desperately hiding in the corner of tank full of convicts . . . grew her out to about a 6" fish, just beautiful, but a little too aggressive* for my tank . . . so I traded her back to the LFS, got a very good deal

all in all, I think Texas - - and Green Texas - - are great fish; I already have an order in for my next fish, a 3" female Green Texas . . .

* by the way, when I say "aggressive", it wasn't so much that she attacked other fish as she was constantly re-arranging the tank to fit her needs. perfectlyl normal I'm sure, but more than I wanted to deal with at the time . . .

Turns out you can keep them in pretty cold water also. I have mine in an outdoor pond for the summer and the water has been cold this year, only getting to about 65 degrees. I read that they can survive even colder but I dont really want to push my luck. He seems happy. He is active and eating well. I will have to bring him in later this year though when it starts to cool down.

I have a 4 inch male, has killed everything in the tank with him except a 3.5" bushynose, and his mate a 3.75" salvini. I hope I'm not going to get flamed for the mixed pair, all their fry is going in to my jag tank as feeders.
They ain't had any eggs hatch as of yet, but thats the plan.

same thing happened to me by accident. my texas and salvini mated. but my salvini female tries to mate with everything.

their preety cool fish if you don't have a bigger flower horn and a bigger gold clown knife. that was my mistake so today i'm going to trade my 10 in gold knife for a 5 inch royal clown knife and a 4 inch gold knife
