I've had this fish since September of last year and have always been under the impression that it was a she because of the black splotch on her dorsal fin but just to be safe I went with an androgynous name: "Cordell" (couldn't help myself being a Texas and all). But I have noticed for the past month or two that she has been developing quite the hump and it has made me question whether or not this fish is indeed a she.

So I figured I would go ahead and post up a clear pic of her and see what everyone here thought.

Also, while I've got your attention I wanted to confirm, is this fish a H. carpintis? I see a lot of ID my Texas threads and the answers seem to differ enough to put the question in my mind.

Thanks ahead for any help, info or opinions! :grinno:

i would say it does look male with the head hump, but my small female carpiintis does get a small hump at breeding time.at that size you should be able to see the tube or spike sometimes for definite ID. your fish might be a mix of carpintis/cyano,great looking fish either way

Thanks for the heads up as well as the compliment! :)

I'll have to take a peek under her/his hood tomorrow when the tank lights are back on to see if I can determine it's sex; I honestly wasn't sure if I'd be able to tell at this point!

Well my Texas began showing it's vent today, and to me it appears to be a female (tube pointed rearward) but I figured I would post a few shots just to be sure.

(sorry, got the shots on my cell at feeding time)

This Fish is doing a great job at confusing me, it's got what appears to be a black splotch on the dorsal fin but at the same time a descent sized hump as well. Pile that on top of the fact that the only reason I saw what appears to be a female tube is because my Texas has been flirting with my Female Severum (yes I know shes a female); I know that two females pairing up is not completely unheard of but it's just another question mark on top of it all.

Does anyone here feel like they can give me a definitive answer as to the sex of this fish?

Thanks

I can on this one :) because the tube is clearly a female and I know these guy's tubes. I actually have 2 males right now.
it's a female healthy, humping up and ready to lay eggs that's why it got a hump
