Texas cichlid sexing?

My buddy gave me this huge Texas cichlid. Idk if it's a make or female? He doesn't know either.

Looks male to me, the high steep profile, and I don't see any dark area in the dorsal, are all male traits.
Although sometimes without another of the opposite sex in the tank, females sometimes take on a dominant look, so hard to be sure.
Here are a couple shots of its close cousin carpintus to compare.
