My Texas Cichlid has had this white dot for about 4 days now. At first I thought maybe he bumped his head cause he was always hiding in this little house that he would barely fit in. Turns out, now it's turned into this white pimple on his forehead. It has already burst and open. For the past 3 days I treat the tank with Maracyn Two. I am on day 3 and was wondering what kind of infection he has. When I first noticed it was looking white I did a 50% water change in my 10 gallon hospital tank. Waited day or 2 and it wasn't going away. So my friend told me to treat it with Maracyn Two. Any idea what it is. My water test were normal cause I actually have no fish in there other than my hybrid red texas/midas frys in there. I feed nothing but Hikari pellets. He hasn't lost his appetite at all and eating normal. He's actually kind of a prick fish and is why I put him in my 10 gallon for week. I really don't mind losing him but I would like to help him out for good practice just in case my other fish get sick. Am I treating it the right way or is it something else? Any help would be appreciated. Here are pics.

Is it a lump or an open sore? Can you get a closer picture? In the mean time salt at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water and we'l se what needs to be done once you get a better pic. If you could also give water perameters including Ph if you can.

It's a open sore right now. So 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of non iodized salt right? Or aquarium salt? I'll do a water check today and you give you the results. Thanks

Yes 1 tablespood of auqarium salt per each 5 gallons of water. Start with that and when you check the water we'll see from there. What are the tank mates? Do you have a QT tank?

Edit- Do a large 50% water change before adding the salt. Clean water is very important.

There are no tank mates other than my frys. I only have 2 of them but they are in a breeding cage. Yes, he is in a QT tank.

Should I wait until I finish treating the Maracyn Two in a couple of days before I add the aquarium salt and do the 50% water change?

Kh=240 gh=180 ph=8.0 no²=0 no³=20

At a ph of 8 maracyn 2 is not effective. For higher Ph tanks kenamycin or triple sulfa are effective. The triple sulfa from API is easy to find. Do the water changes 50% today and 50% tomorrow. You can add the salt with the maracyn 2 in the tank but do the water change first.

Then on Sunday start the triple sulfa, you can use it in conjunction with salt without contradiction. Follow the directions on the 3x sulfa exactly this in important.

Thanks for the instructions Aquanero. I'll go to the LFS today and pickup the API triple sulfa. Should I stop doing the Maracyn Two and then on Sunday start the Triple Sulfa? Again thank you very much. What does it look like my fish has on him btw?

If you do a 50% wc today and another tomarrow you will have effectively removed the maracyn from the system. A day to rest the fish before starting the sulfa on Sunday. As far as what the fish has it could have been caused by and injury that got infected I don't it's looking like some type of disease at this point but triple is a good broad spectrum treatment that covers a lot of bases at a high ph. Don't forget to add the salt today after the water change and replace it tomarrow (only the amount removed by the wc) so if you do a 50% wc add only 50% of the original amount of salt.

Yes, stop the maraycin 2

Already picked up the Api triple sulfur and I did my water change. I added the salt. Question, when should I put back the filter cartridge on? I removed it when I was dosing the Maracyn Two. Should I put it back on tomorrow when I do my last water change? By that time all of the Maracyn Two will be out

His eating habits are the same. So, it's looking good I guess. Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.

You can run carbon to remove the remaining Maracyn but it has to be removed when you start treating with the sulfa.
