There are two fish commonly called by that name, although they are different species. Herichthys cyanguttatus was the first fish to carry the name texas cichlid, then Herichthys carpintis became more widely available in the trade, as for how many distinct types of carpintis there are, "escondido" etc, I've not a clue, there are several. H. carpintis is usually referred to as a green texas, cyanguttatus as just texas. There seems to be a few specifc locale names being mentioned in conjunction with cyanguttatus on some sellers lists lately as well. I'm not sure if this answers your question?
