Ok, I have been told there are a couple different Texas Cichlids out there.

This is the coloration I am looking for. I always thought there were only one species of a texas cichlid. Am I wrong? If so what do I need to ask for?

yes more then one species of texas and i agree with the guy above. your looking for carpintis. if your looking to buy some fry pm john rambo. i think he has some right now.

You are wanting a carpintis escondido. The top picture is breeding colors and the bottom is what they look like normally.

Heres the aquamojo page on them:

WATCH the videos. There is one of them changing colors.

There is also the carpintis "chariel" and carpintis "lahillas".

I am picking up a breeding pair of the "lahillas" on saturday and will be posting pictures of them after I get them in my tank.

Heres the lahillas:

they're both regular carpintis, first pic is just an ugly female. the search option would freeze any computer with this subject..

The true Texas cichlid is Herichthys Cyanoguttatus. The pics above all show Herichthys Carpinte which is commonly called the "Green Texas" although it is really not a Texan fish. They are all beautiful fishes with pearly spots. The Cyanoguttatus has tiny spots and a deeper body profile.

Mr. guts, thanks for the plug. I agree with the above posts. Carpintis is the correct name, and there are multiple regional types, about 3 common in the hoby. The 2 initial pics, as mention above, differ due to breeding color changes, but in the second more blue colored photo, you can distinguish the large irregular shaped blue markings which almost appear as blocks with straight edges rather than round spots. Looks to me like Lagoona Chairel. Round spotted carpintis are from Lahillas. Finally, the more common would be Escondido, usually have wormie blue lines on their face. I have Escondido fry, 5 for $20.

My texas cichlid is breed for color, Mine looks like it has blue spots instead of green and most you see have green and blue spots, If you want one that looks primarily blue look up blue spotted texas cichlid. Hope I helped... You might be able to see him in my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X78qShvP0q0
