After looking at some of the beauties at the bottom of this http://www.aquamojo.com/escondido/escondido.html (show male specimens) page I made up my mind to start off with a 4" specimen, Out of those the blue ones look more striking, I like the hump that merges the back instead of protruding out like a disease. How many months does it take to make a beautiful specimen like that? I'll have it in a 75galon, with a male convict, firemouth and a salvini, in addition to these is it good to have other cichlids tankmates? I want some dither fish too that are not very common like tinfoil barbs and SDs, that could tolerate cichlid bully. How bout having this tank decorated with some crypts, java ferns, anubia and some hardy aponogeton (basically all hardy low light plants either potted or attached to decor)?

How to sex these guys at 3-4" size?

Add pics for sexing. A mature male with a large nuchal bump may take 2-4 years. Tinfoils grow much too large for a 75G. A small (Size) group (4-6) of silver dollars will work out much better.

That fish isn't a regular Texas cichlid. It's a regional morph of H. carpintis, the Green Texas cichlid. You probably won't be finding that particular breed at local stores. I think the photos at the bottom of the page are of the fish when it was 6-7 years old. Takes a while to become that chunky! My male 'escondido' is a little over 3 years old and a little over 10".

I doubt a male tex (carpintis or cyanoguttatus) would tolerate many tankmates in a 4ft tank. Mine didn't anyway. He harassed cons, gts, and a jag, nearly to death, until I moved him into my 125. He is much more relaxed with the added space. I doubt that a con, fm, and a salvini will be happy with a crazed tex in a 75g with them.

Whats the reason your fish did not tolerate others?

I have an excellent pic of one. But its only my other computer bacvk home. And I will not be getting back home till Late Monday or Early Tuesday. Someone PM me then if you want a pic of a phenominal Red Texas.

Or you could try googling 'Red texas'.
