Got this male last week and was told it was a carpintis. I have never had carpintis before only texas. To me it looks like a texas because of the small spots and more blue than green but not sure wanted to see what people think... Sorry for the bad pictures used my phone

Well, Texas is a name used for both H. Carpintis and H. Cyanoguttatus.

You have Herichthys Carpintis.

As already stated, same thing. Carpintis is a specific type of "Texan".

What are the differences? I've had a female for over a year and that was sold as H. Cyanoguttatus and both i got look the same. just want to know if they are of the same. thanks

Thanks for the replies and info. I got this other one that was sold as H. Cyanoguttatus. (I'm guessing female) but I'm having second thoughts looks like the larger male.

Although the differences between cyannoguttatus and carpintus can appear subtle, they are not twin species.
And although misinformed LFSs sell them both as Texas cichlids, carpintus is not from Texas.
Its as if. since you are from southern California, are you called a Mexican?
Or if you are from Veracruz, are you a Texan?
Sorry if that sounds anal, but I find misnomers a bit irritating.

Thanks for the reply and info. Yes i agree it is irritating. I bought this as a H. Cyanoguttatus about a year ago and i never really looked into what it was exactly, until last week a LFS employee gave me the male carpintis. So would you say that the female was missed labeled and is actually a carpintis? just want to now what to call the fry if they do pair up and spawn. Thanks again!
