I bought a Texas cichlid for my 55 a little bit ago. Before I bought it, I did research on a pretty reliable forum, and it said that their max size is 10."

After learning more about these fish, it seems most sources say they get 12." Plenty of sources also say that GTs get up to 12" as well, but the consensus seems to be that a GT can live in a 55 for life. I guess the consensus is this because GTs probably rarely attain this size. How likely is it for a Texas to attain this size?

So my question is, can my Texas live in my 55 for life? I believe it is a male by the way.

This is a good one! i have a texas in a 55 right now and all my years have never seen a male past 10inches and that one was 8 yrs old,so im going for it and if he needs a bigger tank down the road i will get him one.same for gt ive only seen one pushing 11 and it was 15 yrs old,it was big and owned a 90 gallon to himself. my guestimate is texas,jd,gt can stay in a 55 for many yrs before any changes need to be made.

Texas in a 55 for life is fine imo.

Are RTs and SRTs about the same maximum size? I've got my SRT in a 55g and his growth rate has slowed down a lot at 8".

It seems with texas cichlids (RTs,SRTs) hit a wall at 8inches and then grow super slow from there.I have no idea why, but i hear this over and over with many never getting them past the 10 in mark full grown.

Okay, thanks very much. That makes me more comfortable about keeping my guy in his 55g. :)

Yes, thanks for the replies. It makes me feel better about my 55 as well.

Do you have a true texas or a carpinitis? True texas are more likely to reach 12 inches, while their greener cousins are more likely to stay around the 10 inch mark.

I have had my cyanoguttatus since May of 06. He is now about 8 inches long. Although his growth has curbed, I fully expect him to reach the 12 inch mark.

Either way though, I'd say that both species could stay in a 55g for life, just expect them to be more aggro. :D
