Does anyone keep these? Saw a few for sale and I was wondering what I'd be getting into bringing one home. They are about 2" right now. How are they with larger fish tankmates? Any info would be helpful. I did a quick google search and didn't find a whole heck of a lot as far as captivity requirements. Thanks!

they will nip at fish alot and eat the fish i had several at one time when i kept turtles also be sure to give them a smooth place to bask they get infections alot easier than normal turtles since their shells are softer and watch out for fungus too

Thanks for the info... Are they nippy with considerable larger fish? (Assuming the fish won't eat the turtle). Was thinking about putting it in with a few 8" very chill oscars. Would it be best to keep the turtle solo in his own tank? Can I do 2 in a tank? Sorry for all the Q's, just trying to make an informed choice.

Softshells should be kept alone; they'll attack fish (even those larger than them), and are very territorial to their own kind and other turtles. The hard bite and delicate anatomy mean that even small disputes between them and other turtles can results in fatal injuries.

Best,
Paul

Not speaking of the toll they take on water quality

There is one by my house that is nearing 2'. The bite that occured in an atttempted capture hurt enough that i am sure it could take down any of the fish you could put with it.
