ran into the glass hard and almost the whole snout is broke down. I tried catching him to see if I could straighten it and let it heal straight but no go. Its flimsy. The lower jaw is barely still attached and the top jaw is covered in blood and bent bad. Nothing I can really do, huh but let time take its toll?

wow that really sucks

i will post pics tonight. I am so upset. Thing is...it is still eating fine. Happened 2 days ago and ate yesterday and today. Just today the top jaw is covered in blood where yesterday it wasnt.

im actually just guessing thats what happened. These gars are small, like 5-6". My bigger ones didnt care about anything, you could pet them. These ones are very skittish. Dash and dart for any reason

damn very sorry to hear :(

found this post by richard on how gars sustain spine injury, and ways to avoid this is to step up tank size or use massive tank. i know yours is the snout and not the spine, but maybe its the same "c start" as richard calls it that causes it.

whats odd though is that if theres enough force to break the snout, you'd think that the spine is the first to go. i'm guessing the spine is alright with your gar?

you have a frt in the tank, right? could it have been attacked by the turtle?

I have seen it where a gar damages it's snout rather than back in such a case but I would really seriously consider other tankmates being a cause in this. If it is indeed a case where the jaws are damaged in a unrepairable manner it is better to put it down. You however state it is still feeding so I'm wondering the damage here. Pics would really help to explain the full extent of the injury.

These situations are unfortunately all to common in keeping gar...I would not immediately freak out and think all is lost we still may be able to work with this fish and recover it.

as long as this fish is feeding i think it should be ok. may not be the most beautiful thing, but hey...
