so after probably a dozen attempts at laying/fertilizing eggs, this cute couple finally had a batch that hatched.

the female is a thai silk, the mail is a shortbody ZZ.

I separated out as many as I could (about 20-25) into a breeder box, and there's still 6 or so free in the tank.

none have died (other than maybe the first day), but it's been a week now, and the parents are still guarding/protecting them all. (I have a few other cichlids in the tank)

does anyone know what this crossbreed could look like? possibly worth some money?

need to pick up a breeder tank to see if I can't raise these little guys.

will post some better pics and vids as I get them.

the nice ones you pick out are the ones worth money.

they all worth something if they are normal/no defects.

gonna send u pm.

Nice pair, just cull for quality, straight bodies, good fins, I'm a fan of the shortbodies so I would be looking for them and I always look at aggression of the fry too, get those alpha personalities. Good luck on them!

Silk crosses always yield heavy pearls. Most of the spawn will look heavy pearl classic zz type, should get almost half the spawn to be shortbodies, with a few faders (hopefully heavily pearled!). When the parents can no longer keep the fry together after they are free swimming pull them out to grow the fry.

suggestions on tank size for the fry? guess i should get a separate tank going, especially if this is going to be a regular thing. i have a 125g now, figure i should get something to go underneath it, or to the side of it for the time being. (i know i could find answers to these basic questions in the breeder forum, but would rather ask you guys).

the free ones in the tank are sticking to one side for now (underneath the parents) but the parents will leave their side, as they seem to be pretty independent. they are also about twice the size of the ones i put aside in the little breeder box, so I started to feed them a bit more.

thanks guys, this is pretty exciting!
