I bought Purigen 2 weeks ago, and have done one water change since I put it in. I took it out Tuesday because it was brown. The tank has been set up for 3 months and has 2 Penguin 350s as filtration, and about 20 fish from 2-4 inches. Today I tested my water and here it is:

Ammonia 0 (like it should be)
Nitrite 0 (like it should be)

NITRATE 15 ppm!!!!!

All I have to say is WOW! I bought a bigger bag of Purigen and I think it is great. My water was once at >50 ppm and now it is down to 15.

You all should really think about some for your tanks!

Just FYI, it can be recharged easily. Just don't use anything with slime coat, other than prime.

You should try a planted tank, my 135 I have trouble with keeping nitrates above 2ppms.

It is recharging now. I just can't get the chlorine smell to go away!

Have you used any products that have a slime coat in them? Prime is the safest water conditioner to use with purigen, stress coat will actually render the purigen useless. For some reason purigen is not compatable, and will begin to crank out chloramines into your water, that is after you recharge it that is.

I haven't used stress coat in about a month in a half. Just a regular dechlorinator, nothing with "stress coat" in it. It said that it can smell like chlorine and takes some time. It also may be that I had some stuff in it that smelled really bad and that is what it is. I do not know, I am just going to wait.

If you are just using a normal dechlor than no probs. It will have some lingering smell of chlorine, that is ok though. I found that if after 24 hours you change the bleach water again and let it sit another 24 hours then dechlorinate it will come back to its original color again.

I change the water twice a day, kinda like getting driftwood ready.
