I'm leaving town for four days tomorrow. I was curious, should I leave the lights one or off in my planted tanks? What have you guys done during travel?

Looks like I will be making a last minute run to a hardware store. For the sake of knowledge, what are the implications of not having a timer? I.e. what happens if the lights are on for 4 days? Lights off?
Hello; Given the stark choice I would likely go for the lights off. Lights on for four days may have you comming home to a goodbit of algae. I have left lights on for long peroids and the algae was an issue.
One note on the timers. Ths old mechanical style timers had the advantage of continuing to function after a brief power outage. I have had newer digital timers to not function after the power was off even for a few seconds.
I use timers on my planted tanks as a regular thing even when home. The purchase does not have to be for vacation use only.

It's not the plants I'm worried about as much as the fish. I went out and grabbed a couple timers. They seem to work OK. Thanks guys.
Agree as long as you have some natural light. Lighting is for us and plants for the most part.
