At least yours survived, there is still hope. Sorry this happend, but now you know there's a problem and you can stuff the hole in the driftwood with plastic plants or something.

I used to do that to keep my ornates from getting stuck.
 
my bichirs have gotten stuck in sorts of holes.
pleased to say all of them were pulled out safely and most ate right after the process...
 
I hope he is OK, if he didnt drown the he probably will be Ok. Nice looking one too.
