Hello my long overdue thread about the my 50,000 gallon outdoor pond(this thread has taken a decent amount of time to make and I will be adding to it as it progresses) which I intend to turn into a natural koi mud pond this thread will show the progress of working on this project including the algae control, fish stocking etc

The beginning
Earlier this year I noticed a pretty decently sized pond on my granny and grandfather's farm.I began to inspect it and came to the conclusion it would make an awesome koi mud pond like they do in Japan but with a larger amount of plants and reeds for spawning. As well as this in the end of winter / early spring when we have large amounts of rain that overflows parts of the pond onto land (the fish cannot swim out tho as it does not rain enough for them to get far enough and it is tightly fenced in) the benefits of this as the fish are able to swim up these channels and spawn like in these photos.

In the pic there is lots of visible duckweed and beneath that is lots of algae such as hair algae and blanket weed

Chemical used to dose the pond for algae

The pond after dosing with chemicals showing visible reactions taking place pictures will be circled where this is present

IMG_0030.jpeg

in this picture there isn't much reaction just visible places where the powder has not fully disolved but further pictures will show reaction occurring further

This is where the reaction is very present and turned to mush in 48 hours. I will be redosing the other half of the pond and will show further updates then. Thank you.

How are you removing the dead plant matter? Looks like you'd need a boat and a lot of manual removal.

yes Im aware ive got a suit kinda thing which I can go in and bring a large net removal thing for this type of job to drag all of it up gonna be a lot of work!

Sounds like an exciting project. If I’m not mistaken, koi and goldfish eat a lot of duckweed, although you have a ton in there. Have no clue if they eat blanketweed

Bump for an update!
