So I came home to find my 10" silver aro dead :irked:. He decided to go carpet surfing. I figured this may have been a posibility out the back of the tank b/c there is a fairly small gap in the plast of the lid, and another gap in the hood for plumbing. But I found him in front of the tank. Wich means some how he either

A) manged to lift the glass lid and the heavy hood lid made of 1/2" plywood that has a good 10lbs of light strips attached to it.

or

B) he jumped out the crack in the back and somehow managed to worm his way all the way from the back to die right in front of the tank.

Just goes to show no matter how "jumper proof" you think your tank might be, its not. I still cant figure out how he managed to do that. Anyone els have this happen to them? a jumper death that just couldnt be explained?

I'm sorry for your loss. Fish are interesting creatures and how they manage to problem solve with their puny brains is a crazy mystery to me, but they find a way. Life always finds a way.

Thanks guys, no worries though. I knew a jump would be inevitable with an aro, but as murphy strikes he had to do this while I was out lol. I guess all I can do is move on but i find it amazing that he managed to make it out of that little 1/2 inch gap and then flop all the way to the front of the tank.

I had twin 30" silver aros, I was worried sick that they'd jump, so everynight I would cover up my 10' round pond with a heavy tarp. Of course, one of them found gaps in the cover and jumped. Now I don't cover it anymore and the one left doesn't even dare!

Sorry to hear about your loss.

These silver aros really can really jump. I had a 20+ inch aro jump out of the tank, over my head, and land on the carpet several feet behind me once during feeding. I think one of the other silver aro bit it on the tail and freak it out.

I was lucky it missed hitting me in the face. I mean it had some good velocity. The jumping Aro survived the ordeal just fine, but it made me jumpy for weeks.

I think jumping into the lid of the tank is the cause of drop eyes in silver aros. I've heard a lot of theories on the cause, but I think it's just injury from hitting the inside of the tank lid. Any thoughts on this?

he knocked the lid open, my 30"er did it once, now i keep bricks on top.

you can get banned for thinking about that:ROFL:

op's aro mine did that when it was 10"(open top tank)...i found it mostly dead and after many hours it came back and then didn't jump out of the tank till it was 24"+...but that was cause it didn't like going into a bag after the sale...
