Which brand of canister filter good for 40 gallon breeders tank with one lurker puffer? Eheim? Rena Filstar? Marineland C series? Fluval? I looking for lowest price filter that would do a good job. More bang at the lowest price! Also wanting it to be 300-500 gallon flow rate!!

How much are you looking to spend?

A 40g breeder would do quite fine with a number of the different canisters you mentioned.

I have used the Cascade series by Penn Plax due to the bang for the buck. I have a Cascade 1000 on my 65g (36x18 base, same as your breeder) and it works fine with my 4.5" midas, 3.5" pleco and 5 tetras. This filter can be found on sale on-line for around $85-100. It is rated for up to a 100g tank.

On my new 120g (60x18x26) that I am setting up, I will use 2 of the Cascade 1500 which are rated for up to 200g tanks and can be found for around $130-150 on-line.

I know a lot of others who would reccomend the Renas or Fluvals, but for the budget fish keepers the Cascades are pretty decent.

Also a local shop by me runs the Cascade's on all their tanks, and that is what they sell and endorse due to the fact they are dependable enough that they stake their business on them!

Howdy,

I am running an Eheim 2217 on mine, works perfect

I had a Rena XP3 on my 125. It didn't have quite the flow that I would have liked, but that son of a gun was dependable as heck!!!!!
I have had nothing but bubbling issues with my FX5, if I had it to do over again, I'd buy a bigger Rena for my 220.
