For me the brown hoplo catfish (Hoplosternum littorale) is the best catfish. Max size is only 9" compared to other cats that get ginormous. They're VERY active during the day which seems to be an uncommon catfish trait. They swim at the surface looking for food, they run through the sand searching for any leftovers. My only "complaint", and I use that term loosely, is that they're color is drab, but they definitely make up for it in personality.There is a spotted hoplo cat (Megalechis thorcata) that I'm going to see if I can find and hopefully they are just as outgoing.

I dig my doradids. They don't do jack, or hand feed, or come to me for food at all. They aren't colorful either but my O Niger and M uranoscopus are my current favorites. Mega's probably #1.
