Last year during Hermine and Matthew my genny absolutely saved my, uhh... donkey. Yeah, donkey lol
Honestly at our level of commitment to this hobby, I feel that an extra $3-500 for a generator should be considered a basic requirement for what we do.
-The last time I tried that route the were too inefficient at my budget get them big enough and you can run your whole house pricey though

Solar panels aren't really good for outage backup. The way they work is to feed electricity back into the grid to offset your usage, making your net usage (and carbon footprint) nealry zero. You still draw your power from the grid though.
There are advances being made to remedy this in the form of battery backup, but it isn't really common in the market yet.
