Having used pretty much every canister filter out there I seem to have a better experience as far as bio-media goes with the Eheim media. I'm slowly switching all my media in all my canister to specifically the EHFIMECH Ceramic (pre-filter) and SubStrat Pro

I have used the Seachem Matrix however that doesnt seem to be as effective on canister that use trays and have holes since it keeps falling into the holes in the tray for e.g. the Fluval FX5 and Rena XP4. It works great on filters like the eheim classic series.

I'm not a big fan of larger ceramic rings, bio balls or the rena Bio-Chem star's.

Anyone second that? or has a better recommendation in media? or even the order of the media in canister's to achieve maximum effectiveness.

Keep what you have. The Substrat Pro is not going to be any more effective than the Matrix. You would be spending money just for the sake of spending money. I use Matrix in an FX5 without any issues. I use "no" ceramic rings in my FX5 setup (why?). Opinions will vary, but, the order of your media shouldn't make that much of a difference (unless your setup is truly exotic). All three baskets of my FX5 are filled with Matrix, so, it is kind of a moot point with me.

Still, if you get the substrat Pro, it is highly unlikely that you will be dissatisfied with it. My two cents, however, is that it would be an unnecessary expenditure.

I use Matrix in my FX5. To prevent them from dropping through the holes, get something like a laundry bag, add them in, zip tie and cut off the metal zipper portion. Works like a charm, also much easier to wash the media. I just take the whole bag out, give it a swirl in aquarium water, done.

That substrate pro is some really good stuff. Then again it is Eheim.

I don't see that big of difference in Bio Media. You're not going to be able to "see" it work, I have Eheim Substrat Pro and Bio Max. I don't see a difference. It's all the same, IMO.

^ This. I use the pond matrix in everything - AC's, FX5's, and soon in my sump.
