My holiday break accomplishment.. :D I trained both my daschund (wiener dogs) to run on the treadmill.. We have three dogs and the white daschund is just plain over weight. Special diet, seperate feedings, extra walks, you name and nothing is helping Hemi's weight. So I decided this route.. I take training my dogs serious and invested a good bit of time to do this, I sure hope it helps her lose weight.

(disclaimer - don't just tie your dog up and turn on a machine, seriously you can hurt them) If you do it right, it's a great way to get your dog "out for a walk" even when it's 19 degrees outside. :headbang2

Wow, I've never seen an overweight dachshund before. All the daches I've seen are fit. I don't own one though. Just dobermann, miniature pinschers and Belgian Malinois.:)

Really? Its very easy for them to become overweight. She and the black one (not overweight) share the same father. I think the breeder line bred to get the white coloration. She has a crooked tail as well and is VERY hard to train. Poor genes IMO. Hemi is a sweet dog though, she deserves good health.

Kudos to you for being concerned about your pets' health. I think the treadmill idea is great and would still talk with your vet about any joint issues that may arise from the new exercise routine.

Also, take time to walk with them on the treadmill. You know they will enjoy the company.

I still take them for walks of course. Just what we were doing wasn't enough for her health. Both my other dogs are very fit. This seems very low impact compared to the insanity of them on real walks. These dogs are prone to back problems so something consistant and low impact should help right?

Aww good luck with the weight loss! They are both cuties.

If the weight is really sticking and you aren't cheating, I would see about running a blood test for hypothyroidism. Actually where you mention her being difficult to train, that can be a symptom as well. It's a fairly common illness...just wanted to mention. Here's a link to look through.

X2 that was my first thought, maybe a thyroid problem.

Very cute dogs. It's common enough to train dogs on treadmills, they even have dog treadmills. Unfortunately, dog fighters were there biggest purchasers.
