The Bog-wood Monster

On a cold rainy night, I rushed out to a nearby football stadium. Although the rain was abating the road was very wet and flooded in certain corners. I carefully drove in my car heading towards our agreed destination but in my mind I was restless. I had begun to question my decision. Should I end this altogether and only focus on my life priorities? Should I cancel this and turn back? Distracted by some awfully slow drivers and the carelessly speeding cars I made a way to another lane and headed further knowing that I would reach this place any time soon. It was too late to change my mind, I was reaching the junction and the football stadium was only on the right corner.

As I turned to my right the road began to dive under leading me to a vast open parking area. There seemed to be sufficient street lights here but the tall trees and their heavy branches blocked the lights and kept this place quite dark at night. Only a few cars were parked around at this hour, the place seemed lonely and if anything was to go wrong, I did not think anyone would notice.

Slowly I parked my car under a tree and began to search for this man. He said he would be here, but I did not see anyone. About 50 feet away I noticed a car parked with its headlight on and a blue car passed right behind it. I pulled out my cell phone from my pocket and sent him a message that I had reached the agreed location before asking him of his whereabouts. As I waited for his reply I decided to come out of the car and walk to the passenger door to take out the pail I had brought with me.

“The blue car, I am here, where are you? Come to the bus stop area, you will be able to see them better under the lights.” He is here I thought, the blue car was him driving it but I could not see it anymore, where did he go? And there I saw a dark outline of a man far away while he stood waving from the junction of the other end of the stadium. I quickly grabbed my pail and walked fast towards him and it did not seem very long as I looked at his face clearly under the light and greeted him. “Here they are,” he said as he pointed at a pail he had placed on the parking road corner. When I looked into the pail I saw a few black shadows, I began to approach them and knelt on one knee to take a better look. “You brought all seven with you,” I said to him.

This was how I got them, four of them to be precise but they were mostly nowhere to be seen because under the bog-wood is where they live. Along with them were two others of different kinds which had been here for about a month now and these two stayed out. I left them alone and carried on with my daily activities. But when I did check on them from time to time, I noticed changes on a daily basis. The perfectly placed Indian almond leaf was in a different corner and later it was torn in pieces. And the two others which were staying out began to die one by one with bruises and destroyed fins. Strangely, even these dark shadows living under the bog-wood would rush out or stay out with torn tail fins. It seemed they were being chased out, out from under the bog-wood.

Once awhile, I would notice only three of them, but not the other one and sometimes it seemed I had noticed the missing one, it is big with its head protruding out from under the bog-wood.

One day, as I was feeding them large meal worms for the first time, they seemed to show no interest. And one of the meal worms had fallen about a foot away from right under the bog-wood. Suddenly I noticed a quick wave of only a fin and it threw the meal worm upwards as if it had been violently shaken by a strong wave. But none of the meal worms were eaten and so I decided to leave. When I came back later, I saw the white insides of the meal-worms floating on the surface of the water. I began to wonder if I should remove this bog-wood and see what was going on but I figured that I should not interfere with its home.

It was very clear to me that they come out at night and it too comes out at night but during the day, although the others may be near the bog-wood or one of them may be out, it always stays hidden and unnoticeable. Sometimes at night I heard some splashes of water and the heavy knocks on their enclosure but when I turned on the light and checked on them, nothing could be seen, it was as if nothing had happened. If I did notice anything, it would be the torn fins on the others.

One morning when I headed to check on them, I saw a large head protruding out from under the bog-wood again. As I had believed, this must be it, this must be the mysterious monster that lurks underneath the bog-wood and stays perfectly unknown. And when the night arrives, this monster comes out from its hiding to cause terror.

Suddenly the sand was pushed out from under the bog-wood and this immediately sent the large head rushing out and away. It also caused the others staying close to instantly change their positions and become alert. It was only then I saw its black eyes and knew that I had been wrong all along. When the others had moved out, the bog-wood seemed perfectly empty under it and this is what made it so eerie because a monster of that proportion could not stay perfectly unnoticeable under that bog-wood.

It opened its thick jaws and closed them while turning its head as if to adjust its position under the bog-wood. I had been completely fooled because what came out of it was a beast which dwarfed the others with a body width seeming as large as the bog-wood itself. Its head was so big it made the large head rushing out earlier seem so small in comparison.

The bog-wood monster, it showed itself but it did not leave the bog-wood. Its scales shined in silver and grey and they were marked and decorated in black stripes and spots. An ancient beast of the underworld had woken up, or so it seemed, it came out from nowhere, as if under the bog-wood lies another dimension from which this monster lives and when the night comes, it comes with the darkness.

The bog-wood monster had shown itself to me but not fully, I did not see its full body from the tip of its snout to the end of its tail, but I had seen its size and as soon as it showed itself it disappeared.

The End.

Is this leading anywhere? This diatribe needs definition soon or it will disappear as spam.

It is not a spam, I was just sharing my recent experience in fish keeping. But I decided to write it as a story.

And I would love to improve my writing skills. So there you go. I would appreciate any feedback.

My monsters are Wide Bar silver dollars, blue hooks. Last week I was in a store where they had a few smaller ones than the ones I had. These were quite nice looking but were referred to as being black-belt karate fish. Well, after I paused and thought about it, it's exactly what they do. I see the fish in their respective corners, looking all innocent like, then they will strike out and give a karate kick as it were with another fish nearby. They have these big eyes and look so innocent, but they are in fact an aggressive fish. Compared to fish like Tin-Foil Barbs, these are monsters. :-)

It was nice to read something other than a post that says "Future Stocking Ideas", The last thing I would do is to stock my tank the way someone else would. It wouldn't be my tank.
