I am planning on taking my economic stimulus payment and stimulating my fish hobby lol. I am going to be buying a big tank 180 or 240 and want to stock it with a fish I have always wanted but never had the space champsochromis caeruleus. I am wondering for those who have them what could be kept with them? if anything? and how fast do they grow I plan on buying juvies but if they are slow growers I may try to find some adults.

Hello,
Excellent fish. I currently have 2 breeder groups. They don't really grow slow but do usually take time to color up. They will start getting pointed fins around 5-6" and color usually around 8-10". Although I have seen some with color earlier. I have kept them with many other fish including: C. moorii, Rhamphochromis mac., A. christyi, and F. rostratus. They are usually not aggressive but mine become very territorial during spawning. Overall they are really awesome fish I absolutely love mine. Heres a pic of one of my males. He is 9" and has some good blue but still has a way to go. Have fun.

Well the price difference between juvies and adults is pretty big. I see the small < 2" for around $15 and the mediums < 5" around $35 and for colored adults $85 or so. I have had a couple of the smaller 3" or so for a few months and they seem to be fairly slow growing. I do have mine in an overstocked and overfiltered 75g currently with several different species of Mbuna. I would go for the biggest tank you can because at that size it is not real easy to upgrade.

I have the Champsochromis Caruleus as well, and as a predator kind of fish its pretty docile. As long as you keep larger fish it will tolerate them, and not hunt them.

The upgrowing fry or smaller Mbuna are open game though.

Check out my site for photo's of my specimans. Most of the fish (except the aulonocara and Mbuna were/are housed along with my Caruleus)

They are swimming in a 1300 liter aquarium though(around 400-450gal?)

I believe that these fish shouldn't be kept in smaller aquaria as they need lots of room to swim. If they don't have enough room they can get pretty cranky(especially when they are about to go breeding, but theu aren't nearly as cranky as the Buccochromis species).

Check out the GCCA site. Someone has a group for sale, I think adults and juvies.
