Ok i realise i might sound real inexperienced and dumb right now, but i would just like to know how you guys clean your tanks or do water changes besides the filtration systems. Do you simply just insert a syphon and suck a certain % of water out (30%, 50%,etc) or do you suck water out while you sifting the gravel and take out all the "gunk" ,etc. Or is this a bad thing to do? Lets hear it guys. . .I would love to hear from every1 on the forum but especially those guys with MONSTER tanks, with crystal clear water and theres never ever any "dirt" on the bottom.

I siphon out the gunk along with the water. I think if you just left it there you'd get a build up of ammonia & nitrates; over time of course.

I use Python

i siphon out all the crap twice a week as i do a 30%ish water change. i have pool filter sand in my tank so u can see all of the crap on top and would look bad if wasn't cleaned atleast once a week, so i do it twice since i do water changes anyway.

i syphon 10% to get the junk of my sand then do another 50-60% with a kickass pump that goes really fast once or twice a week depending on how busy

I use a Python to vac the gravel while doing a 40-50% water change once a week on my 125.
I also do a 40-50% water change 3 times a week on my bare bottom quarantine tank.

I use a python. (Greatest invention since the wheel) Ive been in the hobby since long before the python. Suck up all the gunk. Find your tanks mulm pit and clear it. Leave the gravel alone. Theres benificial bacteria in it. How much water depends on what kind of fish you keep and what kind of water comes out of your faucet. This is gona take some experimenting. Start with 30% extracted water and work your way up or down after you see the reaction from your fish. Good luck Monsta!

i change maybe 25% once a week on my 300 with the python. i take some of the noticeable crap off the sand every other week.

@ millpool,.... @ your sig!

Yeah these guys and gals are right, a "python" is the only way to go. Its basically a long hose that hooks to your sink faucet and siphons out water and empties it into your sink. Its the cleanest and easiest way to clean the gravel and do water changes. For the guys that used to siphon into buckets you know how easy the "python" makes maintaining your aquariums!
