Ok so I've got a 3 foot cube that's 30" deep, how long would a silver or a rtg last answers for both would be nice I'm hoping to keep a trio of retic rays also.
I'm experienced with stingrays I've kept a trio of motoros before, the tank is around 525 ltrs and its going to have redicolous filtration cheers guys

Sorry meant to mention I will be upgrading to a 6x3 that's 30" deep in about a year I'm able to upgrade but I want to use this cube

At most the largest silver aro that should be in your "cube" would be 10". Silver aro grow 1-1.5" per month on average, with growth spurts of upto 3" per month being common. So if you started with even a baby 2.5" silver your looking at only 6 months best case, as little as 3 month worse case.

Your planned 6 foot tank will not be large enough to house a full grown silver aro and you would need to upgrade within a couple years.

One question ive seen a 18" silver in a 4x2x2 and it looked fine although my pal said he needed an upgrade soon this cube is 50" from corner to corner, its a bigger footprint than a 4x2 I thought I would have longer, does there growth not slow

Well the 4x2x2 is 55" from corner to corner. Also your "cube" foot print is 900 square inches the 4x2x2' is 1152, so your "cube" does not have a bigger footprint.

Silver arowana should be kept in a tank that is at least 3 times the length of the arowana. Tank width at minimum need be at least equal ti aro's length. An 18" silver is too big to be kept in a 4x2x2' tank.

The silver aros growth does slow in length around the 24-25" mark, though at this point they do start to put on much more bulk.

Ok so what sort of size tank are you looking at for an adult or 2? Would a 6x2 be a better footprint to start?

Im no Einstein but it sounds like it is 36"x36"x30" which i know 36x36 isnt 900:screwy: anyways i done see why a fish needs 4x its body length. yes it may not be ideal, but id be surprised if you didnt get a full year out of that tank with a silver. Im sure he would enjoy the extra space when you double the length but i think ud be ok as long as you will be upgrading for sure. i dont have experience with anything but silvers but arent all other species slower growers? end of the day there are no set rules or laws regarding tank size and it takes responsibility and good judgement, because for one to really be happy it would need a lake.

6x2x2' is a good size to start. This would work for upto a 24" silver. As I said before they don't grow much in length on they hit the 24-25" mark(just 1-2" per year) so if you don't upgrade right away, it not overly cramped to have a 27" or so stuck in the 6x2x2'. As said before their are no set rule so if you aren't worried about the well being of the fish then the 6x2x2' may last for even. Plenty of people do it, but IMO it's not right.

Misread that part thought it was a 30" cube. So the tank will hold a slightly larger silver at 12". You'd have to find a slower then average growing silver to get a year, but then again if ya feed it just goldfish and don't change the water maybe it'll happen.

Lol no I take good care of my fish its just such a cool shaped tank I wanted to use it for a bit but the fishes welfare comes first I might just wait until I get a 6x2 anyone know how large a tank my retics will need I know they're small but I think that 8x3 is about as small as I'm gonna go with this eventually

i see you live in the UK

can i just say asian aros ie rtg are not easy to find in the UK anymore

i wouldnt bother buying a silver for a tank that size as it will outgrow it fast

even in a 6x3 i would say its to small for a silver i would go for the rtg if you can find one as they dont get much bigger than 24inch but a silver can be double that size

you could get a black aro again if you can find one

the 6x3 will also be to small for motoro long term
