I'm raising about 20 dovii fry in hopes of finding a female or 2. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me some early signs of gender, like I've noticed some have the solid horizontal. Stripe and others have just a spot. Some are really dark and others light. Any tips on sporting females would be awesome!

Wait until the fry are about 2-3 inches...The anal tubes then can be sometimes seen protruding from the butt.....Thick tubes that stick straight down are female...Thn tubes that have a slight backwards bend are male.............This is the same general rule for all cichlids.........

For doviis usually when they hit the 4"-5" mark the males will start to get spotting above the lateral line and also on the fins which most females don't get.Hope this helps.

It is their breeding tube, not anal tube. The anus is just behind the breeding tube. The tubes will only drop upon spawning, or wanting too. The only way is to wait like Gatling said, and watch for spotting. It will become obvious. The females will have no or very little spotting on the fins, along the lateral line, and on the face. Males will have lots of spotting in these areas.

Hope this helps.
