Seen a number of threads on this fish thought I could start a thread others can add to to help others.

Beautiful fish BUT

I acquired a couple several years ago both passed quickly. I continued to observe this pattern and my competitive juices began flowing. I was actually able to get a male up to 9" and then one day recently just died, acted like he had a stroke and he was done in 24 hrs.

I gave up, these fish are fragile real fragile I will leave this I firmly believe that this fish is a color-morph of a JD pair that, all though gorgeous, carries with it a genetically weak constitution specifically an impaired immune system. There is a reason you are not going to find wild caught EBJD's.

Those who are interested ck this link about the genetic analysis etc.http://forums.biotechniques.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=18616&start=0

You are not the only one, i have never seen or heard anyone say anything other than they are very fragile and very hard to raise to over 5".

Personally i do not like them, i don't think they are anywhere near as nice as a normal Jack Dempsey.

Each to their own.

I tried EBJD's a couple of years ago and gave up after the fifth one I bought died. Only one made it to around 8", the others either died suddenly or ended up with deformities when bigger. I agree, as gorgeous as they are, they're too fragile to enjoy IMO. Once they stop eating or you see any change in behavior, out come the meds and you're pretty much done in most cases. They made a relaxing hobby quite stressful for me. Have my Trimac now for almost 3 years and haven't looked back. I ask about them some times when I see them at my LFS and I hear the same story, "very fragile and hard to keep healthy".

I personally love the EBJD but agree that they are for the most part fragile. I did have one that was really tuff and able to handle being wih grammodes, red terrors, and other aggressive cichlids being the dominant one. He grew really slow and took over 2 years to get to 5 inches. I currently have another 5 inch EBJD that I've have less than a year and has grown from 1 inch to 5 in that time. He is with rainbow fish, congo tetras and other peaceful fish. He is completely harmless and could never make it with other aggressive cichlids. Go figure! I believe EBJD's are best kept with more peaceful fish.

They're a ticking time bomb. But I feel like, it's better to have loved them and lost them, then to have never loved them at all. Sappy I know but I can't help it.

Well many can say definately they've had fragile ones and this may be true with alot out there. Alot of people are not interested in making them stronger the line. Inbreeding them and selling ones that should have been destroyed but also
Ive bred regular jacks and sometimes there deformaties with cichlids that have been inbred. Everone is entitled to there opinon
but still doesnt take away from beauties of these guys .i've seen 50 8 inch ones that are as hardy as any cichlid.
the breeder took a while but bred out alot of issue's. To each is there own.

I have 2 EBJD's (happy to part with one anyone want it for PU?) and they are pretty tough little buggers. When they were very small they killed all their peaceful tank mates. After that I moved them into my bigger tank and they held their own with a full grown pain or regular JD's and currently live with a very aggressive oscar (also up for grabs lol). I know this isn't the norm but they've done well even when the tank overheated this summer and when the power went out for Hurricane Irene. Mine are def slow growers though. Might be that slow growing ones do better. They are at about 4" and are over a year old.
