hi,
I have just recently bought a Midas cichlid. The fish store just had to get rid of it. they didn't know much about it - including its sex. It's about 6-7 ".. It still doesn´t have a lump. Does it mean it is a female, or is there other indicators?

thanks

Ohh. Hump. not Lump... My english is pretty rusty...

Guess that means it is a female. Somewhat dissapointed, as I like the look of the male midas. But a great looking fish anyways...

Kudos, my monster is also hitting the 7in mark...I got him just at 2 inches..Even at this size, I reconized a good hump...With no picures, it's hard to tell, but yeah it sounds like a definate female....Generally speaking, the nuchal hump is the dead give away....Sorry man....Just because of the nuchal hump, 100% of my showpiece cichlids are all males...But hey, females are exotic looking too, rarely though....I did find this female at a lfs last week....The store she's at specializes in monster fish and flowerhorn.....Apparently she's the offspring of one of his prized Red Devil pairs with thick lips....She has such beautiful form and long flowing fins....Hmmm, I may pick her up today....

My female Midas is crazy. extremely tough fish. I have a 5" pink con that is scared to death of the Midas. I had to move her to her own tank, once she snapped that was it, all that was in her mind was "YOU MUST DIE!!!!!". and everything that was in with her was scared to death. Especially the FH which iss bigger than the midas

just because your devil does not have a hump at 7in. doesn't make a FEMALE for sure HUMPS ARE GENETIC I've seen countless females the massive humps and long flowing fins (**** I had a 13in. female midas with a HUGE hump but sure enough she turned out to be an egglayer) and I've sold countless HUMPLESS males I've got a 8in. male now the has NO HUMP at all until you drop a female in his tank and then and ONLY then does he hump up HUMPS ARE GENETIC THEY ARE NOT 100% SEX INDICATORS

My monster started chasing fingers at 4-5 inches....It took 5 months, but at 7 inches, he finally allows me to rub his sides with finger/hand and alll....Of course this did'nt go without some blood being spilled....He's grabbed my pointy finger a few times and once has broken skin...

nice pickup. i have a male with a good nuch at about 8" now. they can learn some cool tricks. very interactive and bright.
