Mission: Big, Healthy, Bright Coloured Fire Eel, In a Sutible Habbitat.
So far ive got the Bright and as far as I can tell healthy part, next target is getting him big.
Ive had my Fire Eel (Dave) about 6 months and hes about 9inches , pretty much same story as most fire eel owners, wouldn't eat nothing when I first got him. He then started eating bloodworm, then I got him onto earthworms, then I got him eating earthworms from my hand, now he also eats prawns.
First question is What should i be feeding him?
As I say at the moment he dont eat much other than earthworms and prawns, what else can I feed him thats going to grow him big and quick.
Second question is how much should I be feeding him? and how often? and is there a better time to feed him morning afternoon evening?
Sometimes he will eat up to 6 earthworms a day, other times he will only eat 2... on average he eats 3/4 a day.
Next question is tank mates?
At the moment ive got him with 3 tiger oscars. but they constantly try and snatch his food therefore im taking them to the LFS and getting credit on them but I dont want a tank with just a fire eel... what other fish could I put in with him? I was thinking silver arowana? pacus? Black Ghost Knife?
Last question is Habbitat? What should I have in my tank?
At the moment all I have is sand substrate some PVC Pipe, and a bucket load(30-40) 40-50mm scottish cobbles. He always buries himself under the cobbles. never stays in the pipes too long and his other favourite place to hide is behind the FX5 intake.
