Over a year ago, I bought my first convict, a little female I named Karma. She grew to have some stunning colors that she passed on to her offspring.

She's in a 55g tank with a pair of JD's (mellow temperament) and a male striped convict.

I haven't been able to find her in over a week.

Normally she comes out to eat, even when she spawns. I've checked the decorations and under the tank and I can't find her anywhere.

She's a special girl to us and has a weird bond with my daughter. They play "finger tag" and she loves to try to attack my dogs through the tank.

I don't know if she's really good at hiding (very odd behavior for her-she's a bit of an attention diva) or if she's totally disappeared somehow, but even with all of the tanks and convicts we have, she's continued to be our special girl and I would really like to know what happened to her.

Any thoughts on where else to look?

on the floor maybe... or mybe she get kill by the JD pair...

Another Houdini! I have had fish that have done this to only reappear bigger, with fry, or scarred. Who knows what happens! My first suggestion would be to look under every rock and piece of deco in the tank. Also look behind the tank again. Some times a second look will find a very dried fish corpse. Check your filter too. I know it sounds weird but trust me, I have found fish in some of the craziest places.

Thank you all!

I found her! She was in the very top of an ornament. I saw her swim out after I pulled it out and put it back in the tank. I have no idea how she fit up there.

Maybe she knew I was getting very worried.

One time I lost a tire track eel for over a month. Took a filter off to deep clean it and found him even bigger than what he was before.

Congrats on finding your fish.

ornaments are always a good first place to look ... I used to have leporinus that would spend hours in a rock cave, never could understand how they fit themselves into it ... likewise, had a pleco that got stuck in a hollow-log ...

I don't use ornaments anymore, just natural driftwood and flowerpots ... cuts down on the mystery disappearances :)

Thanks, everyone! She's very special to me. She was my first "aggressive" cichlid and has taught me a lot. She's gone through a few mates as well. Sometimes they try to kill her, other times she kills them, she's a pistol.

Glad you found her. They're something else, them Convicts. I have a little lady I have grown from an egg, that I will never get rid of... basically she'll have to die.
