my gar jumped out of a well covered tank last night and its only 9" or so!! My wife was up with our little girl and came running in. I got it into the tank and it just floated around so i stuck it in front of the power head and it swam off with a little carpet still attached. 7 hours later its looking fine and swimming fine. Crazy little guy. No idea how he got out. :nilly:

It happens. My gar is very well behaved but one day when I was doing a WC he freaked out and jumped. It happened so quick, he jumped toward the window, slid down the curtain and bounced onto the floor. My tank is pretty high up to. The lid is almost 6 feet from the ground. I quickly got wet towel to wrap him up and put him back into the tank. Of course my gar was covered in fuzz and dog hair and just sat on the bottom of the tank gasping for about 20 minutes. After that he came to and was fine.

glad to hear it made it.

how did it get out and what did you do to make sure it doesn't jump out again?

to tell you the truth i am not sure how it got out. by my overflow there might be 1/2" clearance but he would have to be haulin' to get through there and just the right angle. I am puzzled by it but besides making the lid heavier there is not much I can do.

use tape or press & seal to cover ANY gaps...if there are gaps on top anywhere the gars will find it. also don't underestimate their ability to build up power and speed to jump out. also keep in mind other fishes may startle and get the gar to jump...weren't you keeping yours with some other fishes?
i cover the gaps around my overflows with press & seal (kind of like siran wrap) and that seems to keep them from jumping out that way. the lids are taped down or weighted. i still get surprised by what these fish can do sometimes; glad to hear yours is ok--

Having eels, I have had to get pretty creative with my seals. Anyways, a great solution is weather stripping. You can buy it in 2" wide sections of differing lengths, and they have a small sticky section that you can press onto the tank. It is easily cut with scissors to mold around you equipment. Being that it is design to deal with water, it stays put nicely. Its pliable, but creates enough barrier to keep them from just slipping out.
