sure, there were some exaggerations, but hey... :D

David Soleimani
Period 3
Alastair, King of Brazil, g-d of the Amazon
Alastair was the g-d of the Amazon, but this was not always known. When he was born, his father, Neptune, tried to kill him so he would never be succeeded by anyone but his son Triton, but Amphitrite, his wife, rescued the baby and left it on the doorstep of a family she knew was having trouble conceiving a child of their own in Brazil.

As a child, Alastair grew up with his loving family along the Amazon River, home to some of the largest freshwater fish on earth, including the illusive Arapaima Gigas, a twenty-five foot long carnivore that was near impossible to catch. Every day, he would try a different technique, different baits, different times, but all to no avail. Although he was the son of Neptune, he did not know this, so he did not know of his powers either. Unbeknownst to him, while in the water, he was able to breathe, he was extremely strong, and could swim faster and more accurately than Cupid shooting an arrow. As he grew older he realized noticeable differences between him and his parents and started to wonder if he is really theirs. Upon reaching manhood his parents told him the truth. They knew nothing of where he came from, only that he showed up in front of their hut one day many faithful years ago.

Alastair ventured to the oracle at Delphi, where a soothsayer told him he was the son of a g-d. She instructed him to go back home and go hunting for the Arapaima if he wished to find out which g-d is his father. “But beware”, she said, “if your father finds out you are still alive, he shall tear you into tiny pieces and feed you to the Arapaima.” Alastair followed her instructions and returned to his family.

Upon his arrival he spoke to no one and immediately grabbed his spear and caught and killed a monkey. He used the bloody carcass of the monkey to attract the immense fish, and sure enough, after about thirty-five minutes, Alastair saw the beast’s nostrils rise to take in a breath of air. Upon this moment Alastair dived into the river, not even thinking about the hundreds upon hundreds of deadly carnivorous fish inhabiting the waters just waiting for some fresh prey covered in blood. He soon felt a bite tear through his lower calf as he struggled to keep up with his prey. Soon another came, and another, and another, he looked behind him only to see a school of about three hundred and fifty red-belly piranha. He could only watch them as they feasted upon his legs, swarmed him, taking bite after bite. Alastair was determined; he refused to let this setback stop him. He dove deep under the water to obstruct the piranhas’ already terrible eyesight and stayed under there, swimming deeper, deeper, and deeper. As he got to the bottom of the river, he realized scores of plecostomi were attaching to his body, thinking he was a large piece of driftwood. He kept trying to swim until he realized that the plecostomi were not even holding him back, he was swimming so fast that the Arapaima seemed to be in his grasp, that is when he also realized that he had been deep underwater for about a half an hour, and he had felt no restrictions at all. He stopped and let the Arapaima disappear, brushed off the suckermouth catfish known as plecostomi and stopped to reflect on what was going on and why the soothsayer told him to follow the Arapaima to find out who his father was. He had finally figured it out. Incredible strength and speed underwater, being able to breathe underwater as if he had gills, He was the son of the g-d of the waters, Neptune!

Although this news was incredible, before Alastair could revel in the utter astonishment of being the son of a g-d, he had to capture the Arapaima. It was a matter of pride and he could not let it go. He swam among the river through its tributaries, constantly getting sidetracked by ending up in ponds and lakes, until he finally saw the nostrils coming up for air. He immediately swam as fast as he could toward the Arapaima and made a blind grab at it. He caught it! It was in his arms. Or that’s what Alastair thought. He opened his eyes to see that in his arms was a log. Not the illusive Arapaima Gigas, but a log. That’s when he felt a five foot long mouth bite him in the hip. He immediately lunged out of the way before a fatal gouge could be made. He let himself bleed, although he knew the blood would attract carnivorous fish and snapping turtles, he could not let the Arapaima get away again. He let the deadly fish make the first move, lunging out of the way of its deadly bite, Alastair wrapped his body around the fish and squeezed. The fish’s labyrinth organ collapsed, no longer allowing the fish to breathe, the Arapaima Gigas had finally been caught, and killed. Alastair lifted all 3500 pounds of the monster fish over his head in triumph. He took it home to his family and the rest of the village and they had a feast.

When Alastair was asked how he caught such a thing he told them of his experience in the river that day, leaving out the part about him being the son of Neptune. Alastair could not believe that this was true, but there was no other explanation for his powers. When the rest of his village learned of these incredible powers, they made him their king and married him to the most beautiful woman in all of Brazil, her name was Adriana Lima. Together they ruled for fifteen monotonous years. Although these years ruling were uneventful, they would have gone on even longer had Alastair’s fame not caught up with him. All of Brazil was buzzing with the stories of their king whose power was unmatched underwater until the news was brought to Greece. Neptune heard of this and felt insulted. Had the world forgotten about the g-d of the waters? He traveled to Brazil to see the legend for himself.

When Neptune saw King Alastair he saw something in his eyes. He knew this man although he had never been to Brazil and had seemingly just met him. All of a sudden, he remembered the son he had tried to get rid of over thirty years ago before Amphitrite managed to sneak him away. Neptune could have just let Alastair live, and probably would not have been succeeded by anyone but Triton, but he took no chances. He waited until night to pull of the deed…

While King Alastair was deep in slumber, he was visited by Neptune. He was whisked away and never to be seen again. All that was found was that there were suddenly hundreds of juvenile arapaima with full bellies. These arapaima were smaller, stronger, darker in color, and had extremely large, sharp teeth. We know why their bellies are full, but where did they come from? Arapaima were infertile, they were a hybrid of lions and Oscar fish. Some believe that Neptune mated with an arapaima to allow them to be fertile and be strong enough so that if Alastair were to return from Hades, he would have his hands full, and would not be able to finish the job this time. Still others say that this species of arapaima had always been around, just lurking in the shadows, waiting for their chance to shine, no longer in the wake of the larger species of the arapaima.

whew! congrats if you read the whole thing :)
