umm i have a managuense and i asked one of the workers how to harden the water a bit, he recommended buffers or crushed coral he told me how wen they get jaguars in they put them in the african system were the waters hard. i went with the crushed coral. a little wile later one of the other workers told me i shouldnt harden the water for my jag cuz soft is better , he also said crushed coral can cause algae blooms. does anyone know about this stuff?

Crushed coral is mostly useful for raising PH. Which you *probably* don't want to do for the jag, depending on your original PH.

i dont have a reef tank sir you must have missed the managuense part. and the whole point of this site is to get people input based on experience. so please stop being condescending

if your ph out of the tap is 7.5,jag and most CA fish will be fine with that.i have never heard of coral causing algea blooms, maybe ph swings can? not sure....

In my experience it doesn't matter what your pH is as long as you can keep it stable (unless you're dealing with wild caught fish). For tank bred fish I have kept CA/SA in 8.0+ pH and kept Africans in under 8.0 and haven't notice any negative effects.

Best bet is usually to get your fish adapted to the ph of the water in your house. Trying to manipulate ph usually causes ph swings which will stress your fish. If your natural ph is very high or very low then some fish are best not kept. For instance, my well water comes out at 7.8, so I choose not to keep discus.
