Aright guys

I purchased crystal shrimp for the first time to keep with my l066 babies

The shrimp dropped dead in 24 hours

Amonia - 0

Nitrite - I cant recall the measurement but it was lowm light blue

Nitrate - friggin 80-100 level

Is the nitrate the cause?

If so, can i do a water change tomorrow? I do not want to lose plecos

Please advise

probably was the nitrates, crs can be sensitive to water quality. what is the temp?

PH yesterday was around the 7 mark? The water temp is around 28 degrees (I am not sure what that is in farenheight in America)

Guys, I will do a water change tomorrow...will 80-100 nitrates kill my plecos :/ I am so worried :/ can't do water changes this late...wont be able to sleep...never in my experience with fish have I lost fish this quick :/

Do a few of 25% water changes over the next couple of days to get them down below 20ppm. Why are they so high? That will stress the fish and is an unhelthy level. How often to you do water changes and at what %? Do you vacume the substrate with each water change? How often to you clean your filters (important)? All these things contribute to increased levels of nitrate. As the final product of the nitrogen cycle nitrates need to be kept in check by regular maintenance and water changes.

Thank you for the reply mate. I do water changes once a week (i removed the old gravel a week back, but kept filter media intact), I vaccum the bare bottom once a week. I do 40% water change each week. I clean filter once every 2 months or. Only the sponge, and thats in aquarium water, not sink.

Do you think the fish will be fine till tomorrow? And is it ok if I do a big WC tomorrow to bring the nitrates down?

Wait let me get this straight, you keep crystal red shrimp with plecos? There is your problem. The amount out ammonia and other stuff they produce will kill those shrimp.

They should be fine till tomorrow. You could do a 50% WC but don't get crazy, then do another 25% WC after 24 hours for the next two days that should bring them down. Test your tap water so you have a base line to know what your putting in the tank. Test the nitrates weekly and let the numbers dictate the frequency and % of WCs you need to do. GL.

Hi Aqua, I did a 50% yesterday as you instructed. The Nitrates a very dark orage (almost red), but not BLOOD red as before. I will do another 25% today and keep you posted.

when I expect to obtain new stock, I either do my water changes the day before, or double-check the water parameters in my receiving tank before placing them. the reason being that ALL my new stock is either shipped to me, or transported home in buckets in a several hours' drive. They will already be stressed, worst thing is to increase that.
Your nitrates did not rise to those levels suddenly, it took some time.
If it was me, I'd be doing at least 50% changes to bring them down, but that's me. If I'm already doing the chore, why not.
